Finding Species in Parque Metropolitano – Winged Wonders

☤  Monday, January 25th, 2010   |   Posted by: Chris  ☤

We began our work before dawn, placing the mistnets that would later safely capture many of the avian species found in the park.  Hummingbirds of resplendent colors, striking brush-finches, the underappreciated yet subtly beautiful rufous-collared sparrow and various others were weighed, measured and photographed before being released back into the wild.  While Aves y Conservación staff and volunteers took charge of the data collection, personnel and volunteers of Finding Species worked in the “studio in a tent” we set up even before the placing of the nets.  The photos will be used to create field guides, while the scientific data will contribute to our knowledge of long-term trends in the populations of bird species within the park.
