If you’ve been paying attention to the news these days, you’re well aware of the terrible earthquake in Chile, and the resultant tsunami that spread across the Pacific. You may have also heard that the tsunami did indeed reach the Galapagos. If you’re worried, don’t be.
In terms of the native fauna and flora of Galapagos, this is definitely not the first tsunami they’ve experienced over the centuries, and life is adapted to the vagaries of the ocean. The people also responded promptly and wisely. Evacuation from the ports to the highlands of the islands proceeded in an orderly fashion, with anyone owning a vehicle providing transport for free by local decree. While some of the smaller boats and low-lying hotels were damaged by being stranded or flooded, the infrastructure of the islands in general is intact. I just wish we could say the same for Chile.
